Words are failing me today. In an existence that involves updating a Twitter account, posting on a Facebook page, chatting on Blackberry Messenger, writing emails, and sending text messages, I think it’s fair to say that sometimes I’m just all out of words.
Unfortunately for me, that falls at the same time I’m supposed to be updating my blog.
In light of the recent dispute between RIM and the United Arab Emirates (a place I call home), I’ve started thinking what this constant communication, instant connection, and addictive obsession means for our development as social beings.
We are saying more, but are we doing more? We click instantly, but do we connect deeply?
As the new generation grows up in a world in which literally every single thing can be placed within the palm of their hands, what does this mean for us as parents?
This month we bring you two new features, one of which is all about secrets, and the things youngsters don’t share with their folks. As it becomes easier for them to talk to each other, and rely on each other rather than on us, what do we do as parents to make sure we still ‘know’ our children—to make sure we exist within their reality, albeit virtual?
To slow things down, we’ve only published a few new articles this month. It’s time to reflect on the things we read. To start thinking and doing rather than just talking and writing.
Sometimes words can fail us. But the hope is that our actions won’t.
